Azure Migrate

Azure Migrate is one of the popular services of Microsoft that helps organizations plan their cloud migration strategy. It helps enterprises evaluate the performance of workloads on-premises and estimate the cost of hosting the data on the Azure cloud. As per research the market size of cloud migration services will reach a valuation of $340.7 billion Azure and other companies such as Microsoft, AWS, and IBM are the top providers. Microsoft Azure alone has a market share of 22%, indicating the growing demand for Azure Migrate in the coming years!

What is Cloud Migration?

Cloud migration refers to moving an organization's digital assets, databases, applications, services, and IT resources partly or wholly into the cloud. Reduced costs, deeper insights, and increased efficiency are a few of the reasons for organizations to move to the cloud. As businesses have evolved to become data-driven the need to capture, analyze and utilize the data for improved and faster decisions. The idea of “ knowledge is power” is now transformed into “Data is money” Thus the growing need for churning vast amounts of data is the key reason for organizations migrating to the cloud.

What is Azure Migrate?

Nowadays, migrating to a cloud has become an essential element of every business and thus a perfect strategy for it! Many organizations find migrating the infrastructure’s critical parts difficult and tedious. The complex relationship between applications, data, and workload, data along with poor analysis of the environment are a few challenges that a company faces. Migrating to the cloud will require a thorough analysis of the organization's data of whether to shift all the data at once or would need some rework before initiating the migration process. This is where Azure Migrate comes in handy!

Due to deep insight and the mechanism, it provides during the process of migration Azure Migrate thus is a tremendously used service to migrate all the data to the cloud. It has minimal impact on the business as a whole and maximum return without hampering reliability and performance on investment.

Azure Migration Tools

Range of tools:

Utility such as Azure Migrate: Server Migration, Azure Migrate: Discovery and Assessment are included in Azure Migrate. It interfaces with Azure tools, solutions, and services from other independent software vendors also.

Unified migration platform:

It refers to the only gateway to monitor, manage and launch the migration of  Azure.

Assessment, migration, and modernization:

The hub is used for the three i.e assessment, migration, and modernization.

  • Servers, databases, and web apps: The SQL server and the web applications instances on the local servers can be assessed and also moved to the virtual machine of Azure or even the Azure VMware solution.
  • Web applications: Evaluate and migrate all the on-premises apps of the web to the Azure application service and the Azure Kubernetes services.
  • Databases: Analysis of current on-premises instances of SQL server and the help the databases with migration process to the Azure SQL managed instances, Azure SQL databases, SQL Server, or SQL server on the Azure VM.
  • Virtual desktops: Similar to web applications evaluate and migrate the on-premise applications to the Azure app and also Azure Kubernetes service.
  • Data Utilize: the Azure data box products rapidly and economically migrate immense data to Azure.

Azure Data Migration Services

1. Azure Data Migration Assistant (DMA):

The DMA helps the  process of migration by evaluating the on-premise instances and finding out the compatibility with the latest version of Azure SQL managed instances, Azure SQL Server,  and database service of SQL. It thereby conducts an assessment to figure out the potential barriers and also features that partly or completely support and might have an effect on the plan of migration.

2. Azure Databases Migration Services (DMS):

Users can utilize the DMS for migrating the workloads from many different environments of database sources to the Data platform of Azure services only after the completion of the DMA assessment.  It can be either done online or offline. DMS also offers the users  online migration  of the Azure DB for PostgreSQL single server instances into a revised version of the service.

3. SQL Server Migration Assistant ( SSMA):

Users who use various database platforms transfer the data to the SQL server or the AZure synapse analytics with the SQL server SSMA.  The other source systems that support this are databases from Oracle, MySQL, DB2, Microsoft, and SAP ASE.

Advantages of Azure Migrate

  • It helps users through a guided experience throughout the progress of Azure migration and modernization projects.
  • The users can simplify the operations using a single portal for the visibility of your on-premise and cloud estate end-to-end.
  • Azure Migrate helps in agentless discovery the users can identify resources that are ready for migration with the help of check dependency analysis and the readiness check of Azure.
  • Estimate the actual cost of migrating the resources to Azure.
  • Reduce cost and accelerate innovation by modernizing to PaaS and also SaaS.

Limitations of Azure Migrate

  • A single center can support only 35000 VMs which means the limit of assessment is 35000 VMs only.
  • Agentless migration for VM is only available for Vsphere and Hyper- V. Also, the migration of agentless applications is limited to NET applications.
  • The availability of Azure Migrate is limited to a few regions only.
